This review is written by miko.s (Jan Petrovic) from perfect-digitalsat.com

The TBS 6984 is a quad tuner dvb-s2 pci-e card, allowing the user to connect up to 4 lnbs directly to the card, or even more if using a DiSEqC switch. Worth noting that it’s possible to connect a dish rotor, so this card is great if having a higher number of satellite dishes, because it is possible to connect 4 motorized dishes to every lnb port on the card.

The package:

Included is also the remote control

The TBS6984 card itself is well made, featuring a pci-e port, 4 LNB ports , remote control port and a power connector in case the motherboard is not capable of delivering enough power. The remote control and the receiver for it are bundled with the card, as well as the power cord and the cd with the drivers.

On a Windows computer the installation is very fast and painless, it’s all done in around 1 minute. The user is free to use any dvb software, and I’m using dvbviewer for the occasion. When starting for the first time it asks to select the running tuner and to add satellite or multiple satellites if using a switch. Everything runs very smooth and fast, and it’s even possible to control a motorized dish using a rotor and having multiple lnb-s on other fixed dishes connected at the same time, resulting in a possibility to watch and record a high number of channels all at the same time.

I have the card connected to a motorized dish (using TransEdit to run the dish. PS dvb viewer has to be opened to be able to run the rotor because the lnb power is turned off after closing the dvb viewer)

This is the initial window to select the desired card tuner with dvb viewer.

This is the TransEdit program that allows to rotate the dish. It works perfectly without any problems.

DVB Viewer interface is very intuitive and easy to use. After the scan of the satellites the zapping between channels is very fast and they open almost instantly. HD channels also open very fast, and they don’t even need a high end computer to be watched – I’m running a 1.8ghz core2duo.

Conlusion:

This is a great DVB-S2 card, and it will be a good buy for everyone interested in satellite reception on a PC with a more complex satellite system. It will also find it’s purpose for satellite channels broadcasting over IPTV, because of the possibility to receive a lot of channels in parallel.

I’m very satisfied with the TBS 6984 and would recommend it to everyone who needs a similar card.

The Android Mini PC MK802 is a PC-on-a-stick,it based on an ARM architecture, composed of an ARM V7 based Cortex A8 1 GHz processor, a Mali-400 MP GPU and a housemade VPU CedarX able to decode 2160p video.

It has been dubbed as “the smallest Google TV player”, and is a thumbsize device with which you can turn a computer into a television, It can also be used as a light internet and office computer by installing a Linux distribution like Ubuntu or Lubuntu. It looks like an ordinary USB flash drive. Housing a processor, RAM, storage, and I/O ports, it can perform like an ordinary computer.

How to run Ubuntu Linux on the MK802 Mini PC TV Box

From: http://liliputing.com/2012/06/how-to-run-ubuntu-linux-on-the-mk802-74-pc-on-a-stick.html

It’s actually pretty easy to convince MK802 Mini PC Box to run an alternate operating system. In fact, if you have a properly prepared microSD card, all you need to do is insert the memory card, turn on the MK802, and it will boot Ubuntu 10.04 Linux.

Update: You can also run Ubuntu 12.04, Puppy Linux, or other operating systems on the MK802.

Ubuntu boots very quickly on the little computer, although performance is a little on the slow side. That’s not surprising, given the MK802′s relatively anemic hardware. It has a 1.5 GHz Allwinner A10 ARM Cortex-A8 processor and 4GB/8GB of storage — pretty much what you’d expect from a 2010-era smartphone.

While the MK802 won’t win any speed awards, it’s pretty impressive that this mini pc can run a full desktop-style operating system at all. While it takes a kind of long time to launch some apps such as OpenOffice.org and Firefox, they all work pretty well once they’re up and running.

How to install Ubuntu 10.04 on a microSD card

The easiest way to install Ubuntu Linux is to grab a disk image prepared for the Mele A1000, another inexpensive device with an Allwinner A10 processor, and then write it to a 4GB or larger microSD card.

Here’s how to do that. These instructions will assume you’re working with a Windows PC, but the steps should be similar if you’re using a Mac or Linux computer.

1. Download the mele-ubuntu-lucid.img.lzma disk image from the links at rhombus-tech.net or Linux Questions.

2. Extract the mele-ubuntu-lucid.img file to a folder on your computer. You can use 7-zip or another utility to do this.

3. Insert a 4GB or larger microSD card into your computer.

4. Download and unzip Win32 Disk Imager to your PC.

5. Run Win32DiskImager.exe.

6. Choose the drive letter for your microSD card in the “Device” area and choose the mele-ubuntu-lucid.img file for your “image file.”

7. Click “Write.”

After a few minutes the process will complete and your microSD card should be prepared with Ubuntu 10.04.

If you’re using Mac or Linux, you can find instructions for writing a disk image to an SD card at NookDevs. Note that the site recommends using an app called WinImage.exe for Windows — but I had no success with that method and found that Win 32 Disk Imager worked better.

How to run Ubuntu 10.04 on the MK802

Now that your microSD card is prepared, you can insert it into the TF card slot on the MK802. TF is just another name for microSD.

Theoretically all you have to now is connect a display, power source, mouse, and keyboard and you should be good to go.

But the first time I tried this, my MK802 booted into Android instead of Ubuntu. I ejected the microSD card, inserted it again, unplugged the power and plugged it back in and second time was a charm — Ubuntu loaded a few moments later.

There are few more things you need to know though:

When you hit the login screen you have two options for logging in:

username: root / password: ubuntu

username: ubuntu / password: ubuntu

WiFi will not work out of the box. But it’s very easy to enable. Just login as root, open a terminal window, and enter the command “depmod -a” (without quotes) and hit enter. When that’s complete, use the Ubuntu system menu to restart the computer.

The MK802 simply freezes every time I try to actually shut down Ubuntu (or Android, for that matter), but the restart option seems to work just fine. Once you’ve restarted the operating system WiFi should work.

What’s next?

We’re still in the early days of MK802 hacking. Ubuntu 10.04, for instance, is about two years old at this point. It should be interesting to see if people can get newer versions of Ubuntu or other Linux-based operating systems to run on the hardware.

Light-weight Linux distributions that work well with smaller amounts of RAM such as Bodhi Linux or Puppy Linux could also be interesting.

The MK802 with Ubuntu also ran into some display issues — the edges of the operating system didn’t fit on my 1920 x 1080 pixel display. That’s because the MK802 seems to only want to output at a 720p resolution (whether running Android or Ubuntu). Theoretically it should be capable of higher resolutions, but it might take a little work to enable them.

Where to buy MK802?

Go BUYDVB Online Store to buy MK802,there are two options available for storage:

1GB ROM 4GB Storage ONLY $49.99

1GB ROM 8GB Storage ONLY $54.99

You can choose the option at the product page when add it to the shipping cart

Crystal HD Decoder Boards

Broadcom BCM970012 and BCM970015 Crystal HD card boards can be installed in the Apple TV’s mini-PCIe slot as a replacement for the Broadcom BCM4321 wireless card. These boards enable OpenELEC to decode H.264 video content using a dedicated hardware decoder chip instead of software decoding H.264 using the main system CPU. The standard Apple TV box will handle software-decoding of SD and standard profile 720p content but the 1GHz CPU chokes on higher profile 720p and all 1080p content unless you spend many (many) hours painstakingly re-encoding videos with tools like Handbrake. Even then the CPU is typically running at 90-100% during playback and you can expect dropped frames and stuttering during fast panning shots. With a BCM970015 Crystal HD decoder card installed and decoding offloaded from the system CPU the Apple TV is capable of playing all but the most challenging of 1080p content with the system CPU load peaking around 45-50%.

The older spec full-height BCM970012 or BCM970015 boards can be bought on BuyDVB for $19.99 or $34.99. The BCM970015 supports more H.264 modes and is more efficient at decoding than the older BCM970012 card but both types mechanically fit in the Apple TV’s full-height mini-PCIe slot .the BMC970015 is half-height but is usually shipped with a full-height adapter). In practice there isn’t a significant difference in playback performance.

Gigabit USB Networking

The onboard Realtek 10/100 Ethernet chipset is theoretically capable of handling 1080p content but in reality unless you have a proper NAS system and you’re streaming content from NFS shares you’ll probably see the dreaded “buffering” on-screen frequently with files >10GB in size. To improve things a USB gigabit NIC is a good (and reasonably cheap) investment. There is an element of “russian roulette” when buying from sites like eBay as very few USB adapters are advertised as being Linux compatible; only Windows and occasionally Mac OS X support will be mentioned. OpenELEC supports the ASIX 88178 chipset out of the box, and this chipset is used the vast majority of cheap USB adapters, but it cannot be guaranteed!

Wireless Networking

The internal Broadcom BCM970015 mini-PCIe HD decoder card supports 802.11b/g/n in 2.4GHz and 802.11n 5GHz networks. It is supported by the Linux bcm_sta driver which is included in the ATV image. The bcm_sta driver isn’t the best performing driver but since you won’t be playing content more challenging than standard profile 720p without a Crystal HD board any 802.11n network should work fine. If you’re connecting to an 802.11g network SD content should stream okay but you’re likely to experience problems with HD media that has larger file sizes as the bandwidth is rarely high enough and 802.11g networks often suffer when additional 802.11g devices (phones, laptops, etc.) connect to the same base station. If you’re using an 802.11b network you’ll be able to “scrape” for locally stored media but streaming from a NAS isn’t going to work. OpenELEC includes drivers and firmware for the main wireless chipsets from Realtek, Ralink, Atheros and most Broadcom devices so it’s also possible to install a Crystal HD b oard and still connect to the internet or a NAS box by using an external USB wireless card. If you are going to stream from a NAS it is highly recommended to get a dual-band card that can operate in the 5GHz range (with a 5GHz capable router) as 2.4GHz devices often have single antennae and don’t provide enough bandwidth for reliable streaming of HD content. The negative of 5GHz networking is that the wireless signal is easily blocked by walls so the Apple TV and wireless basestation probably need to be in the same room. If you can use Ethernet without animals or kids chewing the cable or your wife/girlfriend complaining it’s always going to be a better option.

Booting from USB vs HDD vs SSD

OpenELEC can be run from a USB key or USB hard drive if needed and many people start this way as it allows you to experiment without the leap of faith required to wipe the AppleTV OS and install to the internal drive. However, most USB keys aren’t so quick, particularly the smaller 1-4GB drives that people seem to find in a drawer for testing. If you are testing with a USB key it’s a good idea to disable XBMC fanart as this requires reading of large files frequently from the drive and enable “dirty region” encoding to reduce the idle CPU load. Without fanart and with dirty regions enabled the XBMC GUI is noticably “snappier” to use. USB hard drives offer greater capacity but are typically slower than a flash memory key.

Installing OpenELEC to the internal drive will bring a speed boost. USB 2.0 has a theoretical bandwidth of 480Mb/sec (60MB/sec) which is comparable to the performance of the original 40GB Fujitsu MHW2040AT 4200rpm drive. In reality many cheap USB flash drives run around 50% of the theoretical maximum making the internal 40GB and faster Samsung HM160JC 5400rpm 160GB drives a higher performance option.

Best performance comes from an SSD, and for Apple TV users who hoard content on a NAS box it’s an option worth considering as it’s increasingly easy to find older and lower capcity SATA SSDs and small IDE/SATA adapters cheaply on eBay. SSD’s will reduce boot times and make the XBMC GUI smoother to use. Equally if not more importantly, SSD’s also run cooler and an SSD equipped Apple TV is typically 55-60°C under normal use against 70-75°C in a standard HDD equiped box; still warm to the touch (as the Apple TV casing acts us the primary heatsink) but considerably cooler than it was before.

TBS, a professional PC TV card manufacturer, has released a new USB DVB T2 tuner box. This is a dual tuner USB TV box which is compatible with the advanced DVB T2 transmission technology being used for Freeview HD in UK, or Italy, Sweden and many other European countries. This DVB T2 USB TV box makes a feature of the Freeview HD support but also says ‘for standard DVB-T Freeview too. With USB slot, it is more friendly for laptop users.

The TBS5280 has with two terrestrial tuners available on board. That means you can record one channel while viewing another Freeview HD channel. The tuner also has a built in IR receiver for the supplied remote control. There are rare choices for DVB T2 card, especially for USB slot. The price is US$116.99 , each tuner for $58.99. It might be a little expensive but acceptable. Here is a test in Window Media Center. It does work properly in0 Window Media Center and receive the Freeview channels in high definition without any clash.

Using TBS5280 USB DVB T2 Dual Tuner TV Box in Windows 7 Media Center

Honestly speaking I was more interested in how the TBS5280 device performed in Windows Media Center on my HTPC , rather than other DVB software’s. I decided to start by testing with Window Media Center on my Laptop. Firstly, install the Window drivers on PC. TBS has its own supplied CD which included the latest Window/Linux drivers. There is no problem in installing the drivers. The computer also immediately detected the new tuner and prompted for TV setup to be run. The normal tuner setup screens appeared was shown as a choice to install.

Tuning took a while to get started and was a bit slower in Media Center I choose one of the tuner A for testing its stability and reality. Another tuner B can be used to record . The HD channels showed up fine and once tuning had finished appeared in the guide complete with program data

Picture quality was excellent. Channel changing was quick and despite my low signal quality there was no sign of any break up. TBS5280 is obviously able to cope with fast moving images with no sign of it introducing any pixilation or additional jaggedness over that in the original transmission.

Working properly on DVBDream, TBSViewer

I also did a quick test with DVBviewer,Progdvb, media portable. The TBS5280 will also courtesy of its manufacturer’ wise decision to cater for Linux-appeal to those who hope to build an open source PVR around software like MyrhTV, VDR. As a result, The TBS5280 worked superbly. Its sensitivity was judged to be better than that of many DVB-T cards. Even the Crystal Palace HD channels, which will be carried with lower power until switchover (a couple of months, always at the time of writing) is complete, were received without glitches in our Lssex location. The two tuners yielded the kind of recording and viewing flexibility that is currently impossible with set top PVRs

Conclusion

Overall this seems to be a really good bit of technology. It works well and seems built well. I’m pleased to say that it worked really well in Window Media Center. Absolutely, it is one of the best USB DVB T2 cards you are worthy owning in the recent market.
